If your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE starts for a second and then shuts off as if the gas is being shut off, there are a few potential causes to consider:

Fuel delivery issue: This problem could be related to a fuel delivery problem, such as a clogged fuel filter, a faulty fuel pump, or a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator. Insufficient fuel supply or pressure can cause the engine to start briefly and then shut off.

Ignition system problem: The issue could also be related to the ignition system. A faulty ignition coil, ignition control module, or crankshaft position sensor can lead to a momentary start and then a sudden shutdown of the engine.

Security system malfunction: The vehicle's security system could be mistakenly identifying an unauthorized start attempt and shutting down the engine. This issue is more likely if you notice a flashing security light on the dashboard during the starting process. If this is the case, consult your vehicle's manual for instructions on resetting the security system.

Electrical issue: A problem with the electrical system, such as a loose or corroded connection, could disrupt the proper functioning of various components, including the fuel pump or ignition system. Inspect the battery terminals, wiring, and connections to ensure they are clean and secure.

If you are looking to disable the security system on a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, please note that tampering with the security system can have unintended consequences and may even prevent your vehicle from starting or functioning properly. However, if you are experiencing issues with the security system, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Verify the key: Ensure that you are using the correct ignition key for your vehicle. The security system in the 1997 Grand Am is designed to recognize the specific key with a corresponding chip or resistor pellet. Using an incorrect or non-programmed key can trigger the security system and prevent the vehicle from starting.

Check the battery: Ensure that the battery in your Grand Am is fully charged. A weak or dying battery can sometimes cause issues with the security system. If the battery is low, try jump-starting the vehicle or charging the battery to see if it resolves the problem.

Reset the security system: Try resetting the security system by disconnecting the battery cables and touching them together for about 10 seconds. Then, reconnect the battery cables and see if the security system resets itself.

Seek professional assistance: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic or contact a Pontiac dealership for further assistance. They will have the necessary expertise and equipment to diagnose and repair any issues with the security system in your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am.
