1997 Pontiac Bonneville Repair Question

Air conditioning
My 1997 Pontiac Bonneville has an air conditioning issue. When it kicks from OD down to Drive the AC stops and it when it kicks back in to OD it starts again, why is that?

Some makes and models, if a load is placed on the engine, the computer may shut-down the ac compressor? If you place in drive instead of od, does the ac work? The vehicle should run fine in drive, instead of od. Higher rpms, use more gas.
At the moment, I can't tell you that is normal operation for ac?
