1997 Mitsubishi RVR rave and noise

When you rave the car the rpms meter does not climb even halfway. From a standstill position it cannot climb up a road bump, it will only climb when you approach the bump when the car has picked some momentum. When the gear is in neutral position you can feel some jerkin in the car with funny noise. Plus the engine light is at times on and at times off while driving.

My mechanic told me that the car is actually stuck in gear number three and the only solution is to change the gearbox. He explained that the speed sensors are dead

That sounds a little odd. Is the car actually stuck in only third gear. It seems like you would not be able to get moving from a stand still if that were true. As far as the speed sensor goes I do not think it would have much affect on your problem. I still think you should start with getting the fuel pressure checked.
