1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Repair Question

Jeep Grand Cherokee Muffler Problem
What would cause a straight 6 engine to backfire approximately 3 times in the last six months. Each time it blows the muffler apart at the seam leaving the muffler useless.

a misfire or maybe lean condition. scan for codes and check fuel pressure.
