Brakes not working all the time

A couple of weeks ago we had the fr. drivers side wheel come off, only one lug was bent, we had to replace the ball joint as is was sheared off. Now all of a sudden the brake pedal goes to the floor and we have no brakes then as suddenly as they quit they start working again. It doesn't happen all the time. the abs light comes on and it feels like they are trying to work. we replaced the brake pads which still had quite a bit of life to them but they were severly cracked. What could the proble be?? We have had a few close calls and don't want to have anything happen. We drive a lot for our job and need help fast!!
