What would cause my shifter in an automatic to be difficult to move into different positions

The shifter is extremely hard to move to different positions and when it is engaged in drive the engine only revs up, it does not engage into drive, i have checked the linkage, fluid levels, i have tried the main diagnostics and can not figure it out.
