Car will turn over with starter, but engine sounds like it is skipping. Then it will only turn on with a key, and it still makes the same noise. '97 ford escort lx

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Also, what difference do you mean by turn over with the starter and then with the key? Both require the key.
