The turn lights work. The brake lights don't come on, on my truck or trailer. What and how do I check to identify and fix the problem?

It sounds like the fuse #5 20 amp can be blown or the brake light switch is out here is a guide to help you test the fuse and a wiring diagrams to see where the power stops check the brake light switch first. Here is the brake light wiring daigrams below so you can see how the system works.

My 01 Dodge Dakota does not have that kind of switch. It has a connector with six wires on it and if you remove it you have to replace it. I did :(. If the switch does not work the cruse control will not work. I found this out while driving with the switch out of place. I found the fuse you mentioned and it was blown so I installed a new one and all fixed!

If anyone can give me some advice

While in traffic I noticed my speedometer was no longer working. Seconds later the brake light and ABS light came on. After looking at an online forum I decided to go to AutoZone to get a speed sensor (which I still cannot figure out if it goes on the rear differential or the transmission). On the way home the transmission light came on. I now have three dash lights on and a broken speedometer, all happened within eight hours of each other. Also, I noticed that it is not shifting right either, it only shifts in high RPM's, and not as smooth as it used to.
I am mostly worried about the tranny issues.

Thanks for your time, please share knowledge/experiences.

Welcome to the forum, my first thought was a speed sensor. Have the trouble codes checked, some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.

Would this effect idling as well, cuase I noticed that when my ABS & Brake light came on the car now dies sometimes when slowing rapidly to idle? A bad battery can effect idling.

Drivers side brake light doesn't work? Replaced both sides. Turn signal and running lights work and brake light works on passenger side. Also right turn signal flashes very fast. It started doing that when I had to disconnect passenger side fog lamp because bracket broke.

Have you checked the socket to see if power is there? Often times, the socket itself goes bad and the light doesn't make a connection. As far as the fast flashing, that indicates there is a bulb burned out. If I recall, there are two bulbs for the front. If one is out, it will still appear to be working because it lights up, but will flash really fast because one is burned out.

Check that and let me know what you find.

The only bulb out is on the passenger side? Has the bulb been replaced. This is a two filament bulb. Which mean even though the tail lights work. The brake light side may be burnt. Also check the socket for corrosion.
