Vacuum leak, temperature sensor, fuel pressure... could be a number of issues.

We don't have the 16V 2L in North America. What Fuel Injection System Does it have? Can you post a picture of the engine bay (with engine cover
removed... if it has one)?

I can look up more info once I know the engine code (look for the 3 letter code on the timing belt cover).

Is your other car a 2000 Golf... or is this the same car?
