1996 vw cabrio Getting the Fans to turn on

I have a vw 96 cabrio. it over heating due to the fans nt turning on. how do i get the fans to turn on

Power the fan motor direct from the battery if it comes on-check and test the fan relays and coolant temperature ensor-
