1996 Land Rover Other Repair Question

Engine smells hot after traveling, checked oil and down a quart. Looked under vehicle but there is no spots of oil where it may be leaking. Temp gauge is normal right in the middle.
96 land rover range rover se 4.0 v8.

If it smells like sulpher or burnt eggs, it is the catalytic converter. Otherwise there may be something toucing something that is getting burnt. Look around exhaust especially. Also, I am giving you walk through diagnostics for situations like yours. I am not sure if they apply as it might not be what you are describing, but it can't hurt. Just follow the links below.
