MY CAR DOESNT START, AND I DONT KNOW WHERE TO CONNECT THE BATTERY CABLES. DO I NEED A RIGHT SIZE CABLE?

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee • 150,000 miles

We connected the positive cables to the starter, and the fuse box.
we connected the negative to the direct left of the battery to the ground
we connected the other negative cable somewhere near the alternator
all of the cables are the same size, no cable is bigger than the other. The auxillary cables are the same size as the main primary cables.

When the key is in and I turn to crank, it doesnt choke, its only one click. No trying to turn over, just a "click".

Check the starter motor, stater relay, transmission range switch and ignition switch-Make sure the battery and connections are good-

How would I check those relays and ignition switch?

THIS MAY BE WHAT COULD BE WRONG

IF YOU DID ANYTHING OTHER THAN THESE (ESPECIALLY THE JUMP START PART)---YOU MAY HAVE CAUSED OTHER DAMAGE TO YOUR CARS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
