My car is sputtering out and sometimes dies when taking off. I have replaced the wires and the fuel filter. I don't know what else it could be. Please help. It is a 4 cylinder automatic. I have been researching and it says online that most geos have catalytic converter problems or head gasket problems. Some even say it is the fuel injector itself or the fuel module. What is the problem?

Scan for codes and check fuel pressure first

The check engine light came on about a week ago, took it to auto zone and they scanned it and it said it was a shifting problem then later that night it went off. I cant afford hardly anything on the car so if I have to take it to a shop to get it scanned I cant. How do I check the fuel pressure?

Auto zone may rent the gauges you need to hookup to the fuel rail to do it. But you have to scan and fuelpressure tosee if anything is wrong. Do basic ignition checks as well.
