1996 Eagle Talon possible csps problem

I have a 1996 eagle talon esi manual tranny that I just bought but it has a problem it will start just fine and will drive fairly decent for a bit but then it just dies and wont start again it does turn over and try to start but it wont and then about 15-20 min later it will start again and run for a bit and then die again while it is running though the engine smokes a little and smells hot however the temp gage says its fine the engine seems to have some excess oil on it not sure if thats the cause of the smoke the guy I bought it from says that he really thinks its the crankshaft position sensor but I wasnt sure since the car smells hot and smokes a little he also said that if anyone tried to say it was the converter then they are wrong I dont know him at all he could be wrong thats just what he said.

Have the computer scanned for codes and let e know the exact code numbers not code descriptions? Also when it dies and won't start do you loose spark?

It tries to turn over and sometimes it will start for a second but kinda bogs down and dies right after

Get the codes and see if you loose spark when it dies also have you had the back pressure tested on the exhaust when its acting up?
