Checking Oil Level In Automatic Transmission

Caution! Automatic transmission fluid refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids and/or label on transmission oil pan. See: Specifications

NOTE :
This procedure should be performed quickly in order to adhere to the temperature requirements. At the start of the oil level check, the transmission temperature must be between 20 and 30°C (68 and 86°F) . It is always preferable to start the the oil level check at 20°C (68°F) and be prepared to reinstall the oil filler plug at 30°C (86°F) if possible. The inspection should therefore be completed at 30°C (86°F) .
The transmission will hold about 0.6 liters (0.65 qt.) more oil than when the oil level is checked at 50°C (111°F) . When the check is complete, the transmission temperature must not exceed 50°C (111°F) .

CAUTION: If the oil temperature rises above 50°C (111°F) during the checking procedure, the resulting oil level will be tool low.

NOTE : Some oil will always be trapped above the plug and run out when the plug is removed. This is not an indication of proper filling or overfilling.

WARNING: If oil temperature is allowed to rise above specified temperature, scalding may occur .
