1995 Vauxhall Astra Repair Question

Vauxhall Astra Mechanic Problem
My automatic wont change gear,the gear box is making a whiring noise and the sport button is flashing.when i put it in D or R or select 123 it jolts in quite violently.

Something has failed internally, this will have to be investigated first hand by a qualified mechanic,
