95 Trans Am overheated after a short trip (2-3 miles). Got "Check Guages" light on dash and the temp guage was in the red zone. I'm guessing bad thermostat and plan to replace it -- any other things I should look at?

Hello,

A stuck closed thermostat is one of the common cause of engine overheating.

When a thermostat fails at the closed position, it does not allow coolant to flow thru the engine. That is what triggers the engine to overheat. Usually with a stuck closed thermostat the upper and lower radiator hose will be different temperature, with one being hot another one noticeably cool.

Also check to see if the cooling fans are coming on. Inoperative cooling fan is another common reason for engine overheating.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
