1995 Mercury Villager Repair Question

Topics covered: Starter, Ignition switch, Smell.
Mileage: 150,000 miles.

Asked on January 27, 2012

Upon trying to start my Villager the key/ignition got stuck in the start position and the car did not start. After jerking the wheel to get the key out I tried again. Not a sound from the starter or anything. What is the problem?

A strange smell was noticeable while this happened.

Did something overheat?

Nothing, the car had run just fine the night prior. At first I thought it was the starter or starter relay but it was neither. Could it be a bad ignition switch?
