I have a huge problem. Ford Ranger 2.3 motor 1995 My power steering unit suddenly started emptying out every 5-10 miles. I gfot a mechanic to look at it, suspecting it had to be one of the two lines underneath the PSU. He said it was the 0-ring that attaches to the reservoir. He convinced me to replace the whole unit instead of monkeying around with just the reservoir. I agreed and we did that. Still leaking and I'm a little peeved. I took it to another garage and it wasn't leaking too bad when I dropped it off but this was only driving it 1/3 of a mile. They had it half a day and when they called me back they said they couldn't find a leak, and maybe I had just over filled it and the slight leaking was just that. I took it for a drive, parked it, it was only dripping a bit, the fluid was at the right level. However, 12 hours later, there's a huge puddle and it's empty! I'm suspecting a crack in the Steering box that swells up and pretty much holds during driving, but widens out when cold. What do you guys think? Also if this gets to be too much of an expense I'm out $180 already, can I just eliminate power steering?

Best thing to do here is clean it off and actually look at it as it heats up. Normally with a leak that bad it's either a line or so. There are two orings in the pump one at the line and another on the reservoir. Can you put regular steerin gon it? Yes but find the leak first it may not be that exspensive to fix it.

So you're saying there's an O-ring where the line connects to the power steering unit, and if that was leaking it would leak to the bottom of the PSU and look like the unit was leaking from its bottom? Which is what made him think the line was OK and the unit itself was leaking?

See pic, there are a few orings on this wher ethe line goes in to the one fitting there may or may not be a seal there. It really depends if the line is flared or not if it's not it may need an oring. But you have to clean all that crap off first to see where it's leaking. I still believe it's a pressure line as I can't see and don't send a pic because it wil be all oily and I won't be able to tell either. Have someone else look at it that will clean it up first or do that yourself.
