I'm hearing a kocking noise from the engine.

I'm hearing a kocking noise from the engine, would that tell me that my rods are bad or is it something else making the noise? The noise isn;t there while idling but as engine rpmget higher the knocking gets more pronounced, can you give a hint on this, it's a 2.2 engine.
