The engine, transmission, upper strut mounts, and cross member all come down as an assembly, then you remove the transmission. It is critical that you mark the four cross member bolts' location so it gets reinstalled in exactly the same place. If you shift it a little to either side, you will have severe handling and steering problems that an alignment won't fix.

The bolts are removed from the flex plate to the torque converter first, with a box wrench, then the torque converter stays with the transmission when you pull it away from the engine.
