1994 Mercedes Benz C280 Repair Question

I replaced the starter after it just spins without engaging the flywheel. new starter does the same
I replaced the starter after I figured out that I needed a 2' extension and universal joint adapter. My new starter does the same thing as the one that I replaced. It spins without engaging the flywheel.

Try shimming it closer to the flexplate by using starter shims
