Was shifting fine in all gears. Without warning first and second gear was like the transmission was in nuetral. All other gears function and engage properly. Can shift the trans into reverse and first and second gear function momentarily. Then is as if the trans us in neutral in first and second gear.

Check to see if trans linkage is hung up between gears see if bottom of shifter is worn out then where shifter goes in it should look kind of like a box see if the lever ends are either worn out or ne is moved. This should be done in neutral. You can use a large screwdriver to move the levers. If not it may be an fork worn out or slop between shifter and levers intrans.

Made the gear change with a screwdriver manually. Shifted fine 2 or 3 times then acted as though it was in neutral again. Linkage looks fine. Am assuming it is a shifting fork issue. Can they be accessed by removing the top plate of the trans without removing the trans itself?

The shift rails & forks are in the top piece of trans see pic. If you get the cover off then you can get to them without pulling trans. Look for wear on synchro as well it may be bad. Also when you put this back together drain the fluid and put synthetic engine oil in it. It will shift much easier.
