I am a do-it-you're self-er as far as repairs for my Cavalier. I enjoy going to you pull - it junk yards as the parts are much cheaper. I need to know how to update my air conditioner in my car, what parts to buy, and what exactly needs to be done. I went to a garage near me and was told that it would cost me over 400. To update my system. That was just for the parts. Any suggestions? I know, don't use that garage. :)

Update? What do you mean by that? There really isn't an update for the AC system other than if you want to change the type of Freon used.

I was told that the type of freon used in that system was taken off the market because it was bad for the environment. I did however find the"old" freon on EBay. So, yes I guess I'm asking about changing the type of freon used in the A C system. I was told that it wasn't an easy task. Thank you for the quick reply!

Okay. Over the years, there have been changes in the type of Freon used. Your car most likely came with R12 Freon and must be changed to R134a Freon. What I recommend is this. You need to retrofit the present system which requires a couple fittings be screwed onto the existing high and low ports on the system. That is simple. However, you need to evacuate all the old Freon from the system which requires a special tool to vacuum out everything. Once that is done and the new fittings are installed, the system simply recharges the same, just using the new type Freon.

NOTE: If you attempt to do this on your own, NEVER try to refill the system on the high pressure port.
