1994 Cavalier replace serpentine belt- tension
setting

Actually changed out alternator and just need to get belt back on the automatic belt tensioner pulley. Turning its nut in center of this pulley clockwise results in the tentioner pulley, spoken of, to move down and to the right an inch or more. This does not result in it being easier to put serpentine belt back on, however.

Q: Is there a way to decrease the tention even more than it currently is set? If I take off the tentioner to look at it inside; is there a chance of springs getting out of place since it is spring loaded?

They are never easy. The tensioner pulley has to be rotated clockwise with one hand while slipping the belt over the last pulley with the other hand.

I posted a belt diagram for you in case you have one of the pulley's routed wrong. You cannot take apart one those tenisoner's there sealed. Here is the instruction's I have for changing the belt.
1. Remove coolant reservoir.
2. Rotate tensioner clockwise with a 15 mm wrench and slide belt from generator pulley. Release tensioner and remove belt.
3. Reverse procedure to install, routing belt as shown in Fig. 22.
