Clanging metal noise and squealing at stop lights, and starting for the last few weeks, This morning, the belt smoked real bad and clanging noise like a roaring..., then it quit smoking and idled seemingly normal. I heard a metal part give, and went to back up. It was then when I found I had zero brakes. All this happened at once.

If there was smoke coming from the belt, there must have been a pulley that was locking up. From there, something broke and chances are it damaged a brake line causing you to loose the brake fluid and your brakes. Check the belt for damage, broken pulley, and then check the brake fluid to see if it is empty. If it is, check where the brake line broke.
