Headlight flare up
Headlights burn out quickly and now flare up

Suspect the voltage regulator. It's built into the generator so you get to buy both. When the problem is acting up, use an inexpensive digital voltmeter to measure battery voltage. It must stay between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. It will go much higher when the voltage regulator is shorted.
