Jeep Laredo Engine Problem

Having problem with a 1993 Laredo with the 5.2L. Engine die's when given a little throtle in reverse. 2/3 throttle all the way to wide open work's fine. It idle's fine. Under 1/3 or less throttle in reverse with little or no load, it bogs, stalls, and will die. I can prevent it from dying by feathering it. It will do it in 1st gear but far less often(makes sence because I think reverse is higher than 1st). It does it regardless of operating time or engine temp. Can not test codes because no one has the adapter for the OBD1 tester. What could it be?
