Left rear engine compartment. A filter screen on fuel pump inlet removes larger particles.

1998 Mazda 626 mileage: 142,000. What exactly do I do to fix the car if someone accidentally put diesel instead of gas in the tank and drove a couple miles until it stopped? Where is the fuel filter?

The fuel filter is probably in the rear of the car by the fuel tank. Now, on to the diesel problem. Remove as much diesel fuel as possible from the gas tank and refill it with gasoline. You may have to crank the car to purge the diesel fuel out of the fuel lines. After that, it should start and run okay and there shouldn't be any damage to the engine from the diesel fuel.

Under the air box on the driver side.

Good luck if you have a V6 auto with ABS!

I give it to my apprentices for a "learning experience" LOL

Fuel filter is close to the driver side firewall, next to your EVAP canister.

MAF sensor is located on your air filter hose, in between the air filter box and throttle body.

Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Mazda 626 6 cyl Automatic 172000 miles

I am overdue to change the fuel filter and my car has been running poorly for a bit now. I showed all the symptoms of needing a new filter but I procrastinated. My car stopped while driving as if it had run out of gas and now will not start even though I have half a tank of gas in it. I am hoping it is not the fuel pump, is it possible that the old fuel filter caused this and changing it would get my car running again?

Check for fuel pressure .. the filter is located on pump assembly inside the tank !

FUEL PRESSURE
Fuel Pressure Hold
Disconnect negative battery cable. Install fuel pressure gauge in fuel supply line. Reconnect negative battery cable.
Locate data link connector in left side of engine compartment. Connect a jumper wire between data link connector terminals F/P and GND. See Fig. 1 . Turn ignition on for 10 seconds to operate fuel pump. Turn ignition off and disconnect jumper wire. Wait 5 minutes and observe fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be at least 21 psi (1.5 kg/cm2 ).
If fuel pressure is not as specified, check fuel pump hold pressure and fuel pressure regulator hold pressure. See FUEL PUMP HOLD PRESSURE and FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR HOLD PRESSURE headings below. Also check for injector fuel leakage.

Close to your brake master cylinder, on the driver side firewall. If you have the original fuel filter, it is black. You may have to move some wiring out of the way a bit, it might be buried underneath them.
