Good evening,

You must start by disconnecting the battery and draining the coolant. Here are the instructions in the diagrams below to help you get the job done. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Need to replace the current engine, want to replace with one that is as close to the original as possible to ease swap. How can I ensure the one I have selected is correct replacement. I have made sure it is the same size but the year model of the one in the salvage yard is a 1999 and mine is a 2002. Salvage engine has 80,000 miles on it, my engine has 211,000, replacing due to piston rods starting to knock. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The 3.2 should be the same from 1997-2004. To make it easier and because you know that yours runs good except for the rod knock, I would swap over any parts that even look suspect on the yard engine. Also look it over for any issues like, broken parts, cracks, broken bolts and such. As it is your vehicle I would probably wash it off really good and replace things like valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, check over anything that can leak and change it while it is out. Timing belt, rear main seal, oil pump. You will not have better access than with the engine out.

Thank you for the information. I do plan on going through the salvage engine completely to fix or replace any issues. In addition to the things you listed I also thought I would replace the oil and water pump while it was easy. An additional question, would you go ahead and replace the rod bearings in the salvage motor to increase longevity and reliability? I know it sounds corny but it has been a great little car and the body, suspension and interior is in very good condition, really that is the main reason I am doing an engine swap. If I could afford a new or re-manufactured engine I would.

You could drop new rod and main bearings in it if you wished. Even pull the heads and do a valve job and clean out anything inside it. All depends on how involved you wanted to get.

Obviously the same size engine. That would be the 2.2 liter. That year was also available with a 3.2 liter V-6. You just have to be sure to have all the proper smog control components for you year. Some states have other regulations and requirements, but typically, legally, you can use any of the engines that were available for your model in the year it was produced.

Depends on what engine is going back in it.
A long block doesnt have any sheet metal (oil pan-valve covers-etc) so it takes longer - 18.7 hours of labor plus.3 for power steering adn.4 for A/C

A complete engine (salvage yard) is alreay put together for the most part so you dont have to swap everything over- 10.2 hours plus the same.3 and.4 for P/S and A/C

Well anything is possible. But this would be a pretty expensive and time consuming project.
You are going to run into many many problems.

So in answer to your questions yes it can be modified just depends on if you want to spend hundreds maybe thousands doing it.

I have a 1995.5 Isuzu Rodeo 4wd automatic 3.2 v6.
I need to pull the engine to replace the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. I need to kno how to pull the engine. I took it to the shop and they said it would cost $1000 just to pull the engine. To much for me. So I am going to do it myself. I have a cherry picker and engine stand. Thanks for the help.

My rodeo is about to throw a rod and I need to know if I can put an engine in it that is a different size or brand without hurting it. I'm considering putting a 2.6 in my 3.2 v6 4wd, but I'm wondering if it would be compatible. I need to know if the wiring harness would match up, and the hoses, if it will work with a 4wd, and if it will mess up my trucks computer

We only recommend direct fit parts. When you make such changes, sensors, wiring harnesses, solenoids, computers. No longer work.

1992 Isuzu Rodeo 3.1 V6 mileage: 135,000. I am wanting to replace the engine in my Isuzu Rodeo. I have seen many different types of redo's but I would like to put a 305 V8 and change the trans also. I have had trouble finding some one who can help or who has knowledge about doing something like this. My wife likes the body style and is not too interested in buying a newer sport utility. The V6 while being a very dependable engine does not cruise very well (maintain its speed) on the highway. My job makes me travel a lot through a lot of states; I would really like to change this engine out. If you know anyone that can help me, please let me know.

Replacing the stock V6 engine with 305 V8 would make a nice highway flyer. However, the amount of work of changing and adapting to do this engine swap is overwhelming. The challenge is to have a dependable car when you are done. I do not know the smog laws in your area but that should be considered too. Give some thought to leaving it stock and just rebuilding your current engine.
