My si 2.3l non vtec automatic is making a popping noise when it accelerates and it lags when it goes to 2nd and 3rd gear. What is the problem?

If it is backfiring, then you should check your Ignition System and Engine Timing.
Did you get any recent repairs done near by the Timing Belt?

Check for vacuum leaks and do a scan, even if check light is not on.

I just found out the problem. It was the timing belt and it's been fixed. But I still get a pop only only once each day.

A timing belt problem will definitely cause it to backfire.
