I have a transmission fluid leak that I have traced to the end of the drive yoke (the female splined connection to the tail of the transmission. I removed the drive shaft to see what could be done, and I see that the end of the yoke has a pressed metal plug, however there is a hole in the middle of the plug. Maybe 1/8 in diameter. This is where the oil escapes. The hole looks like it has been there a while. It that something that is required? Can I plug it and stop the leak, or will that cause some other problem. Other than dripping oil the tranny works fine.

So, what you are saying is the fluid is leaking at the universal joint and not where it enters the transmission.

Yes, that yoke has to be sealed. Not sure what you can do about it now though. You may need another driveshaft or at least have that one rebuilt by a driveshaft specialist.
