The hoses connects to the top of the box it looks like a can that paint thinner would come in

Is it on the passenger side? If it looks like a paint can or a coffee can, it sounds like the charcoal canister. It is an emissions component that takes fumes from the fuel tank and cycles they through the engine to burn them,
