Ford Ranger Clutch Problem

Hi! I have a 1992 Ford Ranger. I was driving it and it suddenly slid to a stop like the brakes locked up. I tried starting it because it had died and it wouldn't idle when i had in neutral and the clutch out. I have to keep the clutch in. It wont shift in to gears: 1,2, or 3 but if i shift it into 4th then it will drive....what's going on here?! Is it my transmission or something else? Thanks for your time!
