1992 Chrysler New Yorker • 6 cylinder FWD Automatic •

I have a 1992 New Yorker with 3.3 liter. I replaced the alternator with a used unit it seemed to be working. I drove the car for about about 40 miles stopping at a few places when I came out of one of the places and went to turn my head lights back on the dash lights were off all my gauges went all the way to the top and my volt gauge went to the bottom the blinker lights on dash were lit up and high beam indicator on dash was on but when I turned the high beams on the high beam indicator light went out, when I shut head lights off the gauges went back to normal and volt meter on dash is in the middle. When I first installed alternator the volt meter gauge was more than half way up is this alternator bad? Or what could cause this issue?
