1992 Buick Regal 3800 V6. The speedometer doesn't always work. When the speedometer is not working it sits buried on the high side and when up to a certain speed it sometimes will reverse up to about 85 MPH and just sit there. Sometimes the tach will work and sometimes not. The odometer continues to work even though the speedometer is not. What could be the problem and how hard is it to repair?

With engine running, measure voltage at tachometer input connector white wire. Voltmeter should indicate 1-10 volts and should vary with engine rpm. If voltmeter reading is not as specified, check white wire for open circuit. If white wire is ok, computer controled coil ignition system is faulty. If voltage reading is correct, replace instrument panel cluster. The above info came from MOD.

I'd check for applicable mil codes, first. Also, check the vehicle speed sensor. My info on this model year, isn't that great.
