Noise when idling

My 1991 Oldsmobile 88 Royale is making a noise that sounds like a fan blade hitting something when it idles, the noise stops when I accelerate. Any idea what might be the problem?

You need someone to look under the hood to search for the source of the noise. If it's not obvious or easy to spot, use a stethoscope. Idler pulleys for the serpentine belt would the typical first thing to check.

It does seem to be coming from that area, specifically the alternator area. A friend suggested it could be the bearings in the water pump, could that be the problem?

Remove the belt and spin them by hand also rock them to feel fore bearing play
