My car won't accelerate above 40 mph or shift gears. What may be the problem?

Im no mechanic but my 1997 crown victoria wouldnt go over 60 so I changed the mass air flow sensor and it fixed the problem. Do a free diagnostic check at a local auto store and it will tell you if that part is bad.
