My trip odometer never moves off 000. What could be causing this and is it something that a "layman" like myself would be able to fix without spending a lot of money?

I compared my 96 corolla odometer to the mile markers on the interstate, and found that it turns approximately 1.626 times faster than it should. I just purchased the car for my daughter, and would like to be able to keep track of the mileage. The speedometer seems to read accurate. The miles are piling up fast. What would cause this? Thanks.

Seems the odometer is reading in kph instead of mph.

1998 toyota corolla LE. 58,000 miles. Speedometer and odometer blanked out. Replaced speed sensor. After driving a short time, same problem. When I shut the car off and let it sit awhile, speedo and odometer work normal until it trips again. There is no pattern to the amount of time or mileage traveled when it trips.

Usually bad connections at either the sensor or the dash cluster.

Check engine light coming on

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

How do I remove the odometer? I have checked both cables and the gearbox side. All in order.

To remove the meter cluster, you need to remove trims etc.
Unplug the cable and wire connectors.
Is the speedometer working?
Did you check if the cable is broken?
