Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
1990 Nissan 300ZX 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 180k miles

hello, ive narrowed my issue down to the rear differential, when driving at low speed 0-5 mph durring accel and decell i exp a clunk noise from rear diff or when engaging the clutch. i jacked up the car and when i went under i grabbed the drive shaft and wiggled around to check for play but was solid, has about a 16th in of lash which ive been told is perfect.
but when i grab the half shafts that come out the side of the diff and spin them there is slightly more play, plus while spinning half shafts they dont just rotate they also wiggle a little bit (like a top, its access point changes) side to side which is when i hear that same clunk noise coming from inside the diff housing (of course not as loud because my hand cant produce the same amount of tork as the engine.) i can also feel it when the the clunk noise happens.

now for the professionals my question is dose this sound like a ring and pinion issue? or dose it seem to be the barrings for the half shaft outputs? or maybe the stock diff itself?

i guess i wont know until its open but based off this info was hoping someone with exp could help.

to me the play in the half shaft outlets ( the wobbling while in rotation compared to rotating perfectly without the wobble) seems like it might be the bearings. but what about the clunking?

please dont let my assumption stop you from letting me know your opinions.

thanks for the help!
phil

Im having similar problems. While accelerating in first gear I'm hearing a poping noise. To me it seem to come from center console area and during a real low rpm take off it doesn'make the the poping sound. The harder the tale off the worst the sound

So I'm having the same problem! I went to get my clutch changed for a Stage 2 and when I got my car back from the shop they said my drive shaft carrier barring was wearing out and I need it to be replaced ASAP! Well it has been about 5 months sense then and I'm starting to hear really loud popping noises coming from under the car! I think the carrier barring has worn out and im looking at replacing the entire drive train for a steel driveshaft, one that won't need the carrier barring but I was told it will be cheeper to just replace the carrier barring soooo I guess I will wait to see what the shop says! Btw after hearing that poping noise my exhaust leaks into my air vents.I may need to replace my exhaust pipes as well!
