MY SPEED CONTROL QUIT WORKING

1990 Mercury Cougar mileage: 98,400. I was driving home, had the speed control set, I drove up a small hill and then I felt the car speed up to adjust the speed I heard a small pop then my speed control quit working. The engine sounds fine, no missing and I don’t hear any air sucking so I don’t think it’s a vacuum hose but what else could it be?
Check the fuse box for a blown fuse. If the fuses are okay, next thing to check would be the cruise control module.
