engine starts, but backfires and will not idle

compression is good,160-170psi - Rotor is pointing @#1 on tdc.engine backfires while starting creating ball of fire ( very scary) seems like a vaccum leak - but can't find any bad hoses -wonder if fuel pump relay is bad? Spark plugs replaced 10k miles ago, new oxygen sensor, egr valve cleaned 10k miles ago -fuel pump ( in tank ) replaced 30k miles ago
gas was old....but have put several bottles of ethanol stabilzer into tank -tried but couldn't drain gas tank
I'm stumped????
1990 305 engine -was running great

What size engine is it? The V6 had a problem with the spider injectors.
