Couple weeks back my car stalled coming down hill its an automatic trans. Tried restarting right away but it never did until I left it to cool about 1/2 hour later. So I took it home and just about the garage door it stuttered. I took the time and believed it was the carb needed cleaning so I took it apart, replaced gaskets and jets cleaned it up well and placed it back on, when I started the car it started with one touch of the key, then I went to rev it up and it reved to 3000rpms and started billowing white smoke and stuttering. So I shut it off and try starting it again it didnt respond at all. It just cranked,
i went to check for spark seeing that during the cranking I was smelling gas., So I grounded # 1 plug on the engine and removed the rest and cranked. There was no spark so I proceed to overhaul the distributor and I was successful because I am now getting spark and the engine is starting effortlessly. I checked engine timing marks to make sure they are spot on and not off by a teeth or two on the belt. They were good, I used my ear to time the ignition whether advanced or retarded im not sure if it is spot on but the engine idles really smooth and low but it drops in and out with erractic idling now and then, when I try to rev it up again yet it still stutters out at 4000 rpms with alot of smoke and goes no higher if you ease off the gas pedal it will come back and idle good if not it will stall. My question is could I have mixed up the hi and low jet screws in the bottom of the float bowl for my carburetor? And could that be the problem, reason being that was the only thing im uncertain of in reassembling the carb seeing that when I took them out I didnt study which one came from where, and now all my senses are pointing to that because it was doing the same thing (stuttering)after I cleaned it out and before I replaced the distributor.

thank you
plz help

What is the compression of the motor? What is the actual fuel pressure?

The white smoke concerns me. White is coolant burning. That would be a huge issue. A leak down test will confirm a head gasket issue.

Well I havent done any of those but upon looking in my carbs float bowl via the float viewing glass when I rev the engine the fuel level remains the same and the level is at the repair manual specification. And with regards to compression would it start that easy if it was leaky. The only time I getsmoke is when I try rev pass 4000rpm which it doesnt and it sputters other than that the smoke dissappears and it idles fine and it never smoked. I actually thought it smoked becus it was down for two months the smoke is more grey looking not pure white.

Thanks again

Ok, the cat converter may also have a restriction. Easy test with a vacuum gauge.
