Engine stalling

Once running the car will stall after i start shifting to higher gears (usually once i start opening up in 3rd). After it stalls completely, i have to give it a minute or it won't turn over. Then once it is running again i only get about 200 ft before it stalls again....long drive home. The car is not overheating as temp is low, oil pressure seems to be fine around 40-50 psi and i've recently vaccum tested and retuned the carburetor? If running in garage it idles fine and will not stall after long runs at higher rpms and temps, only occurs on open road.
