Toyota Corolla Gas Problem

The temperature and gas meter does not work. The moment the car is switched on the temperature goes as high (needle goes past red - shows north). The gas meter jumps all over - no real idea on the actual usage of gas. I took the car to a mechanic, he checked and said it is definitely the clock and need to fix this. Can I fix it myself? Need guidance please.

It sounds like a problems in the instrument panel itself and it will need to be replaced. That is tough and you can break trim panels getting the instruments in and out. It is best to have someone else have the liability of breaking any trim panels as they are not cheap and break easily.
