I have an 88 GMC Serra 4x4 with 350, overdrive tranny. I am noticing a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd and not much power. I am wondering if I can change the overdrive tranny out for a 350 or 400 turbo tranny and if I can do I have to change out the transfer case.

Would you be going to 2 wheel drive or staying in 4 wheel?

350 trans works well and geared well. Not sure if the tranfer case will work I know the new process cases work well with the 350. You may have to get diferent driveshafts but you wil know when you fit them up there.

It is not a direct fit. You will have mix and match some parts to get where you want.
