WHERE IS THE NOISE COMING FROM
1987 Jeep Wrangler • 197,700 miles
We have replaced our alternator and battery recently. After installing the new alternator, we have a very loud squealing noise. The belt looks good, what could it be. It gets louder when you push on the gas.

TAKE A 3-4 FOOT LONG PIECE OF 1/2"-3/4" HEATER OR GARDEN HOSE......SHOVE ONE END IN YOUR EAR....USE THE OTHER LIKE A STETHOSCOPE
WATCH OUT FOR THOSE PESKY MOVING ENGINE PARTS!!!!!
I'M SORTA BETTING IT'S YOUR THROTTLE BODY.....THE GASKET IS DOING THE KAZOO THING
REPLACING THE GASKET IS MOST LIKELY YOUR FIX
BE SURE THAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THE CJ MEDEVAC-0-MATIC STETHOSCOPE
IF NOT, USE IT TO CONTINUE YOUR SEARCH

IMMA CJ KINDA GUY.....YOU CAN SEE I SORTA AM MORE IN TUNE WITH HELPING THE CJs........THAT HAS BEEN MY MAIN MISSION, SINCE I BEGAN ANSWERING HERE!....ALL OF THESE OTHER VEHICLES I ANSWER IS SOMETHING TO DO WHILE I WAIT ON A CJ TO BREAK DOWN (SELDOM...BUT IT DOES HAPPEN)
I RECKON WHEN I SAW "WRANGLER" I FIGGERED IT WAS A MORE MODERN VERSION W/ FUEL INJECTION
LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE AN EARLY MODEL...WHICH HAD MORE CJ INFLUENCE
.......YOU FAILED TO MENTION WHAT ENGINE?
SURELY YOU WOULDA GOT ONE W/ A 258!
SO......WHAT DO YOU HAVE?.....CARBURETED?
THE "HOSE TRICK" WILL WORK ON IT AS WELL
I'M SHIFTING MY THOUGHTS TO SOMETHING BELT DRIVEN
HOW 'BOUT THIS TEST....IT WILL ELIMINATE EITHER A SERIOUS ENGINE ISSUE OR IT WILL ELIMINATE THE BELT DRIVEN PART
TAKE THE BELT OFF....TURN ALL OF THE PULLEYS BY HAND.....ARE THEY SMOOTH?
WITH THE BELT STILL OFF......FIRE HIM UP.....(NO MORE THAN FOR A MINUTE!!!! ....AS YOUR WATER PUMP WILL NOT BE CIRCULATING)
ARE WE EXPERIENCING THE SOUND NOW?
OK....SHUT HIM DOWN
WHAT HAVE WE DEDUCED FROM THIS....NOISE QUIT? OR IS IT IN THE ENGINE?
