I replaced the engine in a 1987 Chevy S10 with a 2.5 engine 4sp manual transmission. I need help installing the distributor. The engine is at top dead cyl on number 1, both valves closed. I am not sure wire number 1 is on the distributor cap.

Is the donor engine the same as the original? If not, the computer may cause you problems? I put number 1 cylinder on top dead center of compression stroke, stab the distributor. Whichever spark plug tower the rotor is pointing at, is number one, then follow the firing order around the cap. Then, you may have to check timing.

Thanks, the engine is the same model and a rebuilt. My son-inlaw pull the distributor before we could mark where number one is located on the distributor cap. So when I assembled the new engine I made sure the timening whas on tp dead center on number 1 cyl. I dropped the distributor in with the rotor pointing towward number 4 cyl and numbered the wires accordingly to the firining order. Went to start it and misfire. So that is why I new we were off.

Not sure if this year had an electronic advance on the distributor, but make sure to set timing with a light.
