Lincoln Mark VII Ignition switch Problem

I had to replace my ignition switch in my 86 lsc. I got the new switch plugged the electrical connector in and when I lined the metal peg up with switch it started to smoke(the key was in the ignition and it was turned on). I disconnected everything as fast as I could, and put old switch back in. I tried to start the car and i got nothing,no dash lights thats radio, clock, climate control.Cant hear fuel pump either. My ? is what could have fried along with the brand new ignition switch?
