Grand stalling problem

When I start my car and leave it idle it runs fine, it may even idle fine for up to ten minutes. But when I would press the accelerator and bring the rpms up it will still run fine, but as soon as i let off of the gas pedal and the rpms get lower...the car sputters out. If I hit the gas as I hear it sputtering out, sometimes I can save it from stalling. Most of the time it will stall though.
Its a 1985 mercury grand marquis.
What do you think this can be?
Thanks

Check fuel pump pressure. Check for vacuum leaks. Check for tune up.
